As the Germans overreached themselves with a last-gasp effort to win without extra time, the little Argentine genius caught them on the break with a beautiful little pass to Burruchaga. Burruchaga raced some 50 yards through unguarded German territory, calmly drew Schumacher – then planted the most important goal of his life into the far corner of the net. Even the Germans were now forced to accept the inevitable. Three or four of them collapsed to the turf, holding their heads in sheer disbelief. A few minutes later cascades of silver foil were floating down from the shouting, chanting ecstatic spectators to greet the most spectacular exciting victory even this great competition has ever staged. Victory was no more than Argentina deserved.
